Paradise Campground
Paradise Campground on the McKenzie River is highly regarded for its prime riverfront location, lush old-growth forest setting, and immediate access to top-tier recreation trails. Originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, it seamlessly balances a rugged, sub-tropical wilderness vibe with convenient, well-maintained facilities.
Key Highlights
- Stunning Riverside Campsites: A significant portion of the campground’s sites sit directly on a bend of the river, allowing campers to sleep right next to the white water. “What a beautiful campground with gorgeous spots right along the river, the camp host is world class at his job and clearly cares about this area.”, as noted by reviewers on Google Maps.
- Old-Growth Canopy: The campground is nestled under an immense, shaded canopy of giant Douglas firs and western red cedars draped in moss. Ferns cover the forest floor, providing a very secluded feel and natural privacy between campsites.
- Direct Trail Access: You can step right onto the famous McKenzie River National Recreation Trail directly from the campground entrance. It is a legendary 26-mile single-track trail highly sought after by both hikers and mountain bikers.
- On-Site Boat Ramp: Rafters and kayakers can launch directly into the McKenzie’s famous whitewater right from the campground’s private boat ramp.
- Excellent Fishing: The cold, clear waters right off the riverbank offer premium catch-and-release fishing for trout and steelhead. Facilities & Comforts
- The Essentials: The campground features paved parking spurs, fire rings, and picnic tables.
- Day Use Area: The adjacent day-use area, built originally by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, adds picnicking and additional river access, and both the amphitheater and picnic grounds are wheelchair accessible.
- Upgraded Restrooms: Unlike many primitive camps, Paradise features clean flush toilets and sinks scattered across its loops alongside traditional vault toilets.
- Community Features: It features an open-air amphitheater used for hosting educational and cultural programs during the peak summer months.
- No Hookups: It is a dry-camping facility with potable water available from spigots, but no electricity or sewer hookups for RVs.

Season: Typically open late spring through early fall, weather and snowpack dependent. Some sites are first-come, first-served while others are reservable — availability shifts by season, so check current status before you go.
Sites & Fees: 61 sites for tents, trailers, and RVs, spread through old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar. Standard nonelectric sites; no hookups. Nightly fee is roughly $22, plus an additional-vehicle fee. Maximum stay 14 days. Reservations (where available) are made through Recreation.gov.

No showers and no electrical or water hookups at sites.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- RVs and trailers should double-check site dimensions before booking, as the loop configuration can be tricky for larger rigs.
- Cell service is generally available. Can be spotty with some carriers.
- Bear-aware food storage is required, and campers are asked to source firewood locally to avoid spreading invasive species.
