About Blue River
Flowing through the forested mountains east of Eugene, Blue River is a beautiful, peaceful mountain stream that gives the community of Blue River its name. The river winds through the Willamette National Forest, surrounded by towering Douglas firs, moss-covered forests, and the rugged Cascade Mountains.
The river is especially appealing to visitors looking for a quieter outdoor experience. Unlike some of the more heavily visited destinations along the McKenzie River, Blue River offers opportunities to explore, fish, paddle, hike, and enjoy the forest with a little more breathing room.
The river is also closely connected to Blue River Reservoir, a scenic mountain lake created by Blue River Dam. Together, the river and reservoir form one of the area’s best destinations for warm-weather water recreation.
Recreation
Fishing
Blue River is open to year-round fishing and is stocked with rainbow trout. The river and reservoir offer opportunities for anglers looking for trout as well as warmwater species in the reservoir.
Boating & Paddling
Blue River Reservoir provides considerably more room for boating and paddling than the river itself. Kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and other small watercraft are popular, while the reservoir also accommodates larger recreational boats when water levels permit.
Swimming & Water Sports
During the summer, Blue River Reservoir is a favorite destination for swimming, waterskiing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Its forested shoreline and mountain setting make a day on the water particularly scenic.
Hiking & Forest Exploration
The surrounding Willamette National Forest provides numerous opportunities to explore on foot. Trails near the reservoir include the Buck Mountain Trail and Lookout Creek Old Growth Trail, while the nearby forest roads and West Cascades Scenic Byway provide access to additional hiking and sightseeing.
Camping & Picnicking
Visitors can camp near the water at Mona Campground and Lookout Campground, both located along Blue River Reservoir. Lookout includes a boat launch, floating dock, picnic area, and day-use facilities, while Mona offers campsites tucked among the surrounding forest.
Wildlife & Scenic Viewing
The river corridor and surrounding forest provide excellent opportunities for wildlife watching, birding, photography, and simply enjoying the Cascade Mountain landscape.
Blue River Reservoir
Just upstream from the community, Blue River Reservoir stretches for more than six miles through the forest. When full, the reservoir covers roughly 1,400 acres and is surrounded by miles of forested shoreline. It is one of the area’s premier spots for fishing, boating, swimming, waterskiing, canoeing, and paddleboarding.
Two major recreation areas, Mona Campground and Lookout Campground, provide access to the reservoir, along with boat launches at Lookout and Saddle Dam. Water levels can vary substantially during the year, so visitors planning to launch a boat should check current conditions before heading out.
Why Visit Blue River?
Blue River is a great place to slow down and experience the forest, water, and mountains of the McKenzie River region. Come for a morning of trout fishing, spend the afternoon paddling Blue River Reservoir, hike beneath old-growth forest, or simply find a quiet place beside the river and enjoy the scenery.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Blue River makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding Willamette National Forest and the many adventures found along the McKenzie River.
