River conditions & hazards +
This stretch is flat, wide, gravel-bed river rather than whitewater, but it’s not without incident: in June 2019, a cottonwood tree fell across the entire width of the McKenzie between Bellinger Landing and Hayden Bridge Landing downstream, closing that reach until it could be cleared. It’s a good reminder that downed trees and sweepers, not rapids, are the real hazard on this part of the river — always worth a check on current conditions before launching, especially after storms.
The current here is steady and cold even when the surface looks calm, so keep a close eye on kids and swimmers near the ramp, where the bank drops off faster than it appears.
